Our book club has a whole new format!
An era will be chosen and various forms of art related to Norway in that era will be discussed. Topics will include music, film, artworks as well as literature.
The first era chosen is the 1940s.
The 1940s era was selected because 2010 is the 70th anniversary of the invasion of Norway and the 65th anniversary of the end of WWII. The 1940s offer many opportunities for selecting an item (e.g., piece of music, a film, a book, an article, an item of art, etc.) that would be of interest to Club members.
Please come out with your ideas of what you would like to choose from the 1940s era. Future meetings will be structured to allow everyone a chance to present their topic or item to the group for discussion

Stamp collecting is one of the cultural skills pins that can be awarded to members for collecting postage stamps from Canada, Norway and the USA. One of the optional activities is to attend a stamp club or special interest Lodge stamp group for a year (minimum 6 times).
We are lucky to have two members, Elaine and Sandy, who have collected stamps for many years. They are ready to help out all members interested in beginning this new world-wide hobby.
We invite all lodge members, including our youth and heritage members, to participate in this new club.

Sun Dec 7 Solglyt Lodge Christmas Party
Nordic room 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm

We are pleased to announce that there will be an added attraction at the Christmas party this year.

Laura Ellestad, a Hardanger fiddle player from Calgary, has agreed to give a short performance and presentation on this unique traditional Norwegian instrument at the Christmas party.

Laura has spent two winters studying Hardanger fiddle in Norway and will be home for the Christmas season before returning to her studies in Norway.
Laura has performed in Western Canada, the Midwestern U.S. and in Norway, and she often plays as a dance fiddler, both in Norway and in North America.

As usual, the Christmas party will also feature crafts and treats for the children, snacks and refreshments, and Christmas carols to piano accompaniment.  Please bring something for a light lunch - finger food, baking, fruit or snacks.  Coffee and juice will be provided.

This is an excellent opportunity not only to enjoy Christmas festivities, but to hear and learn a little about the Hardanger fiddle.  Bring your family and  friends.  All are welcome!

For information call Louise Johnson at 780- 483-8232

Canadian Wildlife Artist, Clarence Tillenius will be a guest star at a special showing of a documentary about his life and art: "Tillenius: The Art of Nature". The film was produced by Pirkko Karvonen of Karvonen Films.

Born in 1913 to a Swedish father and mother of Norwegian descent, Clarence Tillenius grew up surrounded by nature on this parents' homestead on the prairies. Clarence spent a lifetime studying wildlife and translating nature into art. When in his early twenties, a tragic accident deprived him of his painting arm, he persevered to become one of Canada's leading wildlife painters.
In celebration of his 90th birthday, Karvonen Films presents a portrait of a man who has been described as "the Dean of Canadian Wildlife Painters." The story follows his journey not only as an artist, but also as a naturalist and conservationist, and follows him into the field for an in-depth look at how he observes and captures nature on canvas.

Huntford's biography draws on a wealth of new material, including diaries and hitherto untapped documents. "It uncovers a restless, Faustian spirit, a Renaissance man born out of his time, a pioneer in oceanography and skiing, one of the founders of neurology, an artist, historian and diplomat."
The book is the story of Nansen's life: his childhood, his scientific studies and discoveries, his trek across Greenland, his attempt to reach the North Pole and his later years as a statesman.
