The Scandinavian Heritage Society of Edmonton coordinates cultural activities
in the Edmonton area representing the five Scandinavian countries of Denmark,
Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. Its main activity is to organize
and present the Scandinavian Pavilion at the annual Edmonton Heritage
Festival. The Scandinavian Heritage Society has also been involved in
activities at the Provincial Museum, the Festival of Trees, and the Heritage
Museum in St. Albert. Elsewhere, it has mounted displays and distributed
information on Scandinavian crafts, food, costumes, products, and on Viking
history. Our Valhalla Scandinavian folk dancers have entertained at seniors'
lodges for the past seventeen years. Now we also have an enthusiastic
group of Junior Valhalla dancers who first performed at the 2002 Heritage
Festival and who have continued to meet and practice for subsequent year's
festivals and Nordic celebrations.
Membership in the Society is granted automatically to the members of the
five ethnic Scandinavian organizations. The Society has a telephone message
centre that assists people in accessing information about Scandinavian
activities, services, culture and language, and memberships in the Nordic
organizations in Edmonton.
