The Edmonton Scandinavian Centre Association is the successor ‘not-for-profit’
entity established to replace the Scandinavian Centre Co-operative Association.
The Co-op was created in 1954 with three objects:
· To bring about, through co-operative action, the united association
of the Scandinavian people of the City of Edmonton and vicinity, and to
promote cultural and social activities defined to each nationality in
the interest of participating associated organizations.
· To erect and operate a Scandinavian Centre to carry on therein
social activities and community entertainment and to lease the same to
others for such purposes.
· To make it possible for the Scandinavian people in the City of
Edmonton and vicinity to have a common meeting place where all Scandinavian
associations and organizations may meet.
Subsequent to the sale of the Scandinavian centre to the City of Edmonton
for road widening purposes, the Association has been managing
the proceeds received from the sale and exploring opportunities for acquiring
or building a new centre.
As an alternative to a new Scandinavian Centre building, the Association
Board has executed an agreement for meeting space at the Dutch Canadian
Club (Edmonton). All Scandinavian groups using the facility are reimbursed
the rent costs out of Association funds. In 2004 a further agreement was
reached with the Dutch Canadian Club to construct an addition to the Centre.
The Association contributed $175,000 to wards this new project that had
an estimated cost in the five hundred thousand dollar range. The new addition
and renovated Dutch Club is scheduled for completion in December 2004
and this space will be used by both the Scandinavian groups and the Dutch
for meeting and social purposes for the foreseeable future.
